"The industrial sector is one variable determining the economic development of a region, without a massive industry support, independent, modern and democratic, then we will only loyal audiences in their own country".
The people of eastern Borneo, must agree with the statement, "East Kalimantan is one of the richest provinces in Indonesia, but why is poverty still so big?". Although the government has always argued that pendatanglah causing greater levels of poverty, but of course it will not happen if the level of absorption of labor (employment effect) run in a linear fashion with the existing workforce. Many variables that cause, one of which is the growth of local industry area that runs slow.
Independence of the local industry to be alienated by the stigma of oil and gas wealth and coal mine which is becoming a comparative economic advantage for East Kalimantan. The pattern of foreign investment is expected to be able to build the economy of East Kalimantan, was not significantly make the process of technology transfer in the region. Foreign corporate domination-is still very dominant in East Kalimantan managing natural resources. Contributions made by foreign companies to the region's major areas of cash income, but would not it be much greater if the assets and wealth of our region, capable of independently dekelola own?. This is the problem of development of East Kalimantan, especially its economic field we must respond together, both government and society.
East Kalimantan's natural wealth can indeed be said to be abundant, especially oil and gas mining sector, but it all does not mean anything today. East Kalimantan today is still identical with poverty, backwardness and underdevelopment in almost all areas compared to other regions in Indonesia. The poverty rate in East Kalimantan, based on a survey of the processed data of the National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), until March of 2007, the population of East Kalimantan that were below the poverty line amounted to 324.8 thousand, or approximately 11.04 percent of the total population of East Kalimantan as many as 2,957,465 people. Compared with the poor population in July 2006 which amounted to 299.1 thousand (10.57 per cent), mean number of poor people increased by 25.7 thousand. If we use the standard international calculations of the categories of the poor (those with incomes below two dollars), then of course the figures mentioned above will be ten times as much more apprehensive.
Kaltim Industrial Portrait
Local industrial sector in East Kalimantan to this day has not contributed so significantly to local economic development. That's because our industry sector is very weak both in terms of technology, production capacity and its ability to compete with foreign industries. In addition, the local industrial sector also does not have Kaltim populist platform, ie as the main support for the welfare of the people, but profit-taking platform kapitalism or without consideration of all aspects of sustainable development (suistanable development).
East Kalimantan's natural wealth, especially the mining sector of oil, coal and gas, are not able to be optimally utilized by local industry. In fact asinglah companies who use it through the TNC-MNC, a lot of exploitation of natural wealth Kaltim which of course results and benefits are not entirely for the benefit of the people of East Kalimantan alone, but developed countries Vendor-owner of the company.
Since the New Order era, the economic development strategy used did not conform to the formulation of the basic needs of the community. Developed a long line of industries, ranging from automotive, aircraft armament up, shows just how obsessed we follow the developed countries are much more developed. The average industry developed dizaman New Order, not at all correspond to the basic needs of society at large. Why did not breaking pecan industry, or an increase in agricultural technology produksifitas more we focus on, which incidentally has become a major problem of our society?.
If drawn on the economic context of East Kalimantan, it is certain that the results of oil and gas production and coal is also not completely be consumed by the public. Coal, natural gas, oil, etc., in the end a major export commodity for the region / Other countries. In general, Kaltim only going to get capital support from the marketing of the oil and gas production. Kaltim in general, have not been able mengembangankan modern industry based on the interests of the people, Hence, the dominance of foreign companies who are exploiting the oil sector, gas and coal in East Kalimantan, continues to lead and take over the wheel of industry development in East Kalimantan.
Dependence
Kaltim not be denied is one of Indonesia's largest oil and gas pengahasil. Main source of income as a pillar of economic development relies heavily Kaltim this oil and gas sector. Comparative advantage (comparative advantage) has become its own value to the direction of future development of East Kalimantan. But excellence in oil and gas sector, it is not accompanied by the growth of manufacturing industry as one step towards a modern industrial, with the aim to provide people's basic needs (basic needs approach), particularly food and clothing. This certainly will cause traffic imbalance of commodity consumption. One form is, the level of commodity prices of basic needs in East Kalimantan is well above the average in other areas. This is because the consumer goods imported more people from outside the region, particularly food products abroad. Just look at food products made in Malaysia who are circulating in East Kalimantan! A view that raises questions of fruit; "why Kaltim until now not able to develop outside the oil and gas industry independently?". A very easy question to answer, because East Kalimantan is still experiencing a very unusual dependence on oil and gas industry, compared the effort to build its own manufacturing industry in the region. As a result, stakeholders in the area of East Kalimantan, was busy with traffic arrangement of oil and gas industry, rather than preparing agendas industirialisasi particularly in manufacturing.
Kaltim indeed be proud of the natural wealth that is owned, especially the oil sector, gas and coal, but without the support of the people's basic industrial development, then the effect will be even greater dependence. Though East Kalimantan alone has enough potential natural assets in the agricultural sector and food crops. In the strategic plan (Strategic Plan) issued by the Provincial Department of Agriculture crop kaltim, it seems clear that the natural potential of this sector is quite promising. Just how the efforts in improving productivity alone. For all this, it received less attention from the government. Lack of modernization of agricultural technology, lack of efforts to increase quality of agricultural products and food, basic materials and facilities inadequate farmer, became the main obstacle at this time. As a result, Transfer of technology to the agro-farming industry was just alone among the public discourse.
If if we want a little condescending to learn from China's economic development strategy, the formulation of the construction industry we should be able to do well in East Kalimantan. The practice of empowering small-medium industries (Home Industry) of China conducted with patience, can reap unexpected results have been fantastic few years later with the economics of growth rate on average 9-11 percent annually. This is often termed the economists with the program "Leap Ahead" conducted by China since the days of Mao Tze Tung came to power. Similarly, Cubans who initially is a country with subsistence agriculture as the mainstay, is now progressing well due to industrial development digenjotnya State. Of course, with technology and science and technology capabilities of people, Cuba has managed to ensure the industry people can eat three times a day. Wealth of natural resources and alternative energy and the amount of productive labor (humans) will be sufficient capital to develop local industrial sector. Still many of the labor force were unemployed due to the limited ability of regional economy to absorb labor would be missed if the industrial areas to be strengthened.
Blueprints (blue print), construction of industrial zones was a little relief with the realization of three-point area of industrial zones, namely; Bontang (Bontang Industrial Estate), Banjarmasin (KAPET KAKAB DAS), and Balikpapan (Industrial Area Kariangau-KIK). But the third region is still dominated by non-manufacturing industries. Bontang Industrial Estate for instance, still focused on the chemical industry as seen from the companies that exist in the region. Assuming want to empower the potential of natural resources in East Kalimantan, especially oil and gas sector, it does not mean Kaltim not afford to build a massive outside the oil and gas industry, especially the manufacturing sector. Domain effects will spread dharapkan-rural areas, feel sluggish and not targeted in the absence of more concrete efforts to spark a massive industrialization pogram.
In the concept of industrial development, there are several steps that must be passed, myakni; (1). Development of basic industries, among others, metal industry (steel), electrical industry, energy, basic chemicals, etc. to ensure the availability of raw materials and fuel industries. (2). Development of agricultural industrialization in order to ensure the availability of food for the people. (3). development of capital goods industries, namely machinery industry, transportation industry, etc.. And (4). development of consumer goods industries. The first stage has led to the maturation process, with the proliferation of the energy industry is owned by Kaltim. But looks stagnant immobile at all with mandegnya memabangun efforts outside the mine industry abtu gas and coal. Agricultural industry, capital goods and consumption, is still a mere concept of head without ever realized with good field.
Strengthening Strategy
It is still relatively underdeveloped industrial sector in East Kalimantan, was caused by several factors, among others, low quality of human resources, low technology and is still very lack of capital, especially capital for rural small industrial sector (Home Industry). In addition, the limitations of technology and human resources are also due to the limited funds that are owned by local entrepreneurs. In general, very few local companies that has its own research and development (development research). One indicator that can be used to measure the magnitude of the impact of technological and human resource limitations on the performance of industrial sector is the level of productivity, either partially from each of the factors used (such as labor and capital goods), as well as a whole is referred to as Total Factor Productivity (TFP). TFP owned by Kaltim, still far lower than other large areas, thus resulting in low growth industries. Here are some of the problems that exist in the local industrial sector of East Kalimantan:
Globalization of law in the last decade has undergone a fundamental change in the pattern of world competition in production and international trade, where "the capacity of technology", became a very important factor in determining competitive manufacturing sector of a country. The ability of these technologies consist of several elements that its control depends on the stage of industrialization of a country. There are six categories of technological capabilities: (1). Knowledge and skills necessary to identify, design, develop, and organize a new industrial project or a project to modernize and expand existing industry. (2). production capabilities which include all the knowledge and skills necessary to operate a plant. (3). ability to make small changes include the engineering of adaptive and organizational adjustments to make minor adjustments or continuous incremental improvement in both design and product performance as well as in production process technology. (4). marketing capability which refers to the knowledge and skills to gather information on demand patterns, market trends, and creating distribution channels efficiently and effectively. (5). ability in terms of knowledge, skills, and organizational abilities in streamlining the flow of information and technology, and (6). ability to conduct discovery of new technologies both process technology and technology products.
It's time for memabngun Kaltim industry seeks an independent, modern and popular. Independent in meaning, are able to walk in his own abilities without having to depend on outsiders. Modern in a sense, developing industry that is able to take advantage of technological developments in the 21st century (with the appropriate technology category of course), primarily to the goal of improving the quality of regional products. And democracy as the embodiment of industry supported by basic industries and capital goods industries of the productive forces that we have truly capable of is directed to sustain the life and general welfare of the People's Kaltim.

Scuba Diving in East Kalimantan
Do you want scuba diving in East Kalimantan? Not far from the disputed area between Malaysia and Indonesia in the eastern part of Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo), in fact not far from the once disputed Sipadan island which is also famed for its diving, there is a group of islands with top notch diving. Not as famous as its neighbour in the north, the islands offer – according to some – better variety in both the diving itself and the marine life.
This group of islands is located off Kabupaten Berau in East Kalimantan, off the mouth of the big Berau river. There are several islands usually visited for diving, among them are Derawan, Sangalaki, Kakaban, Maratua, Nabucco and Samama. Among these, Kakaban is probably the most unique. This island hosts a unique landlocked saltwater lake, similar to the one found in Palau. Once part of the sea, the lagoon fringed by atoll was uplifted by tectonic forces and separated from the sea thousands of years ago. The lake hosts thousands of jellyfish, which after thousands of years of freedom from predators have evolved into a stingless form.
Diving around Kakaban is also superb, offering different marine creatures, from schools of barracuda to tiny pigmy sea horse. Sangalaki's specialty is in manta rays, and Derawan's are turtles. Apart from its impressive wall diving, the island of Maratua can offer an adrenaline rush type of dive. This island is the emerged part of the fringing reef surrounding a lagoon. There's an underwater channel cutting the northeastern part of the fringing reef, connecting the lagoon with the sea. Dive when the tide is going in, starting from the mouth of the channel in the sea, and you'll be in for a jet coaster ride. The water would rush in forcefully, creating a very strong current that will literally throw us to the middle of the lagoon. Diving during the time when the tide is going out is very dangerous, however, because strong down current is created at the mouth of the channel as water pours out of the lagoon into the sea.
Berau islands, situated in the eastside of Borneo, are so famous among diver community all around the world. One of the islands is called Derawan, the most intended diving destination for divers. It is located less than 30 minutes of the eastern coast of Borneo near the city of Tanjung Redep (around 2.5 hours away). It has several unique landscapes/seascapes, in the form of walls, reefs and caves with different kinds of inhabitants. In just one reef, you may find more than 50 species of hard and soft corals. More than that this island is also well known as an island of turtle kingdom since so many turtles swimming around during the day and coming to the land to lay eggs during the night. What is so amazing is that sometimes they do this in front of the resort area. You may start enthralled in the first dive around the jetty, where you can find many fabulous critters around the jetty, such as luminous colored squids, crocodile fish, seahorses, and many others.
Another island is called Sangalaki, known all over the world as the center of Manta ray, a giant and gorgeous ray that has wing span up to 3 meters wide. There are so many Mantas ready to swim encircling you even while you are snorkeling below the surface. These critters are not aggressive, so don't be afraid to see them around. You will gasp seeing how elegant they swim with their giant wings. The underwater scenery is simply beautiful making all dives become unforgettable breathtaking experience.
The island of Kakaban, a 9 shape island, is an isolated marine lake (lagoon) and unique in its own. Thousands (or millions?) of years ago the island was naturally uplifted and then isolate the marine ecosystem from surrounding marine area (according to one of researchers in Snellius Expedition I on 1929-1930), making all biota in this marine lake become very unique. The only other marine lake in the world is Palau, but people said that the bio diversity in Kakaban is incomparable to those in Palau. The lake of Kakaban has very unique and endemic critters, such as non-stinging jellyfishes (Cassiopeia ornate, an upside down swimming jellyfish; Mastigias papua, a brownish blue jellyfish; Aurelia aurita, a plate shape jellyfish; and Tripedalia cystophora, a finger size jellyfish) and non-stinging anemone (Actinaria). There are more unique critters in this lake such as sea cucumbers (Holothuria cavans and Synaptula spinifera), crustaceans (Orcovita saltatrix), tunicate (Styela complexa) and fishes (Apogon lateralis, Exyrias puntang, Antherinomorus endrachtensis, and Zenarchopterus dispar). Certainly there are many other unidentified species. While Prof. J. Kingdon, from Oxford University, called this island as 'The temple to Life on earth', Dr T Tomascik, a Canadian researcher, said that this place is a biological paradise with Cassiopeia Ornate as a trademark. Beside those endemic critters, Kakaban has many underwater caverns in the outer side of the island.
Not far from Kakaban we can find the island of Maratua. The waters around this island have so many pelagic, such as schooling barracuda, trevally (jack-fish), dog tooth tunas and mackerels, hammerhead sharks and mantas, making it an excellent place for divers who love pelagic. The island is home to apes, bats, and various birds, an ideal place for sight seeing while doing surface interval.
There are many more small islands around the Derawan islands, for example Samama and Panjang. Each of the islands offers the unique scenery of bio-diversity for divers to interact with. You will also see the Blue Light Cave, where you can start the dive at 2 m depth cave and end at the opening at various depths in the wall. Last but not least, for macro enthusiast, you will be delighted by heavens of macro in all majestic dive sites of Berau islands.

Mine Tours in East Kalimantan
Widjaja Mertokusumo in tulisanya entitled "Recycling Sawahlunto mining town, this mengugah me, to try the other side menulusuri Samarinda City that has been dubbed as mine, because almost all the country surrounded by mining permit (Mining).
What about the East Kalimantan province alone, the data in 2009 from the Department of Mines, that already there are 33 mining permits a Coal Mining Agreement (PKP2B) from the Central Government and permission KP 1212, with half the area of East Kalimantan region.
With a lot of mine, certainly caused a lot of impact, and social problems. So does mine not so long age, and nature that can not be updated with any road, although there are post-closure reclamation efforts. Which obviously will remain the largest remaining wells, the width and which can not be closed in again. Not to mention let alone using models of mining permits issued by local governments and the Chest (Mining illegal) is far from the reclamation effort.
Post-closure positive side, this could be the asset, East Kalimantan, Samarinda especially to learn to make mine who've run out his contract into something useful and beneficial to society. Yes by creating ex-mining areas are developed, managed, into the business of tourism.
It was developed in Australia, which generate foreign exchange and become an attractive tourist there, what about Indonesia, we can learn from the mining town of Sawahlunto. The city already has a clear vision to make "Sawahlunto in 2020 into a cultured town mine tour. A rare courage to make local government, as embodied in the book report mining tourist town Sawahlunto (2001).
Mine was chosen and used as a tourist attraction, because of the uniqueness, and excellence in Sawahluntuh dikawasaan West Sumatra. On the basis that here is the first and oldest mines in Indonesia. Mine are moving by means of forced labor and the research and development of mining technology from long ago.
The area of former mines and remnants of mining activity or activity that is focused and packaged as a tourist attraction as part of mine tours such as:

2. 2. Processing installation or management of mining products, namely the installation of dams pencuciam solution (sizing) of coal;
3. 3. Transport infrastructure and mining products, from the mine until kepelabuan; and
4. 4. Socio-cultural product in the form of mining activities, equipment and supplies related to the life of the mine.
Efforts perintisaan mines tourism activities, need to remember Kaltim, a lot of holes peningggalan or sumbur-source ex-mine. This future can be used as a place of tourism activities and heritage preservation, which can be understood as an attempt to interpret the re-mining activities as part of natural resource wealth Kaltim.
Something real and not managed as it is in the former gold mining area of PT Kem in West Kutai. now almost a ghost town, all the employees go, and settlement activities also began to quiet, quiet, and the mes / mes or former office building that went untreated. It is time for local governments to be creative with the idea of a museum of mining in East Kalimantan. In order to develop potential areas of East Kalimantan province known as the abundant natural resources such as: forests, mines, plantations, and others.
It's time to have thought to put mine on the side of humanity, the beauty, and the glory and the rasp of this beautiful nature. By making the former mine area as a tourist mine, we can learn a lot about how Kaltim mine could become the world's largest coal pengeskpor, mine? How coal is abundant not menyamin electric presence in East Kalimantan, do not make citizens prosperous, growing poverty and unemployment are rising, and power struggles in the name of elections received from mine. All life in this city is so tempting and shiny party scrambling in a black gold mining, power, politics, and the rasp was as a single integral in human peradapan Samarinda.
Kaltim Oh Kaltim 10 years would end the black gold party belle province today, the only remaining former mining area. History Of Kutai
Kutai is the traditional name of a historic region in East Kalimantan in Indonesia on Borneo, a Dayak people of the region with a language of the same name and their historic states. Today the name is preserved in the names of three regencys in East Kalimantan, the Kutai Kartanegara Regency, West Kutai Regency and the East Kutai Regency. The major river of the region was and is the Mahakam River.
History
The history is usually divided into two periods, that of the early Kutai Martadipura phase some time around 350-400 and the later Kutai Kartanegara phase beginning around 1300.
Kutai Martadipura
Seven stone pillars, or yūpa (“sacrificial posts”), have been found in Kutai, Kaman Estuary, near the Mahakam River. The plinths bear an inscription in the Pallava script of India reading "A gift to the Brahmin priests". The style of the script has been dated to the last half the fourth century. It is believed these religions were brought to Indonesia around the second and fourth centuries, respectively, when Indian traders arrived on the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi.
The names of three rulers are known from the inscriptions. The first ruler mentioned is Kuṇḍungga, the “lord of men” (narendra), his son Aśwawarman, styled the “founder of the dynasty” (vaṇśa-kartṛ) and grandson of the first and son of the later, Mūlawarman called the “lord of kings” (rājendra). As Kuṇḍungga does not seem to be a name of Sanskrit hinduistic style while the other two are, it is presumed he was a leader of local origin and it was his son Aśwawarman that adopted the hinduistic belief. It was Mūlawarman who let these inscriptions be made. While nothing of the military actions of his two predecessors is known, "Raja" Mūlawarman states to have conquered his neighbours in battle. The name of his kingdom is not mentioned on the inscriptions nor do any other documents in other countries relate to a kingdom at this time in this region. It is not known what became of the kingdom after these pillars had been erected. It may be possible that the name Kutai, as in Tuñjung Kute of the 1365 Javanese Majapahit poem Nāgarakṛtāgama is as ancient and reflects the original name used a thousand years earlier.
Kutai Kartanegara
Around the end of the 13th century the kingdom of Kutai Kartanegara was established in the region of Tepian Batu or Kutai Lama. The first known ruler is Aji Batara Agung Dewa Sakti, who is thought to have ruled from 1300 to 1325. Aji Pangeran Sinum Panji Mendapa, who ruled 1635-1650, was able to conquer the kingdom of Kutai Martadipura and merged the two realms thus Kutai Kartanegara Ing Martadipura.
In 1667 the Dutch V.O.C. attacked Makassar on the island of Sulawesi leading to the downfall of the Bugis Kingdom of Gowa. Some of the Bugis under the leadership of Lamohang Daeng Mangkona or Pua Ado I immigrated to Kutai on neighbouring Borneo(Kalimantan) and the ruler of Kutai allowed them to settle in Kampung Melantai around the Karang Mumus River, now known as Kampung Selili. This settlement eventually developed into the modern town of Samarinda.
Islam took hold in the region since the 17th century (most of the Bugis where moslems) and Aji Muhammad Idris, ruling 1732-1739?, was the first ruler to have an islamic name.
After a civil war Aji Imbut, after finally becoming the ruler as Aji Muhammad Muslihuddin in 1780, moved the capital in 1782 from Pemarangan to Tepian Pandan. The name of the capital city eventually developed from Tangga Arung to its present form of Tenggarong.
In 1844 the Dutch defeated the Sultan Aji Muhammad Salehudin, forcing him into exile, and took direct control of Kutai.
The Japanese invaded the region in 1942 and aknowledged a "Kooti Kingdom", that was a subject of the Tenno. In 1945 Kutai joined, along with its neighbours, into the East Kalimantan federation.
In 1949 Kutai finally became part of the United Republic of Indonesia.

The traditional language of the region is referred to as Tanggarong Kutai Malay and is considered a local malay language, such as Banjarese and Bukit Malay to the south, Kota Bangun Kutai Malay to the west, Berau Malay to the north and others more distant. As such Tanggarong Kutai belongs to the large Austronesian family of languages. It is part of the Sunda-Sulawesi languages branch, together with Malay and Iban as well as Buginese from southern Sulawesi that is also spoken in Samarinda. It is somewhat less related to the Borneo-Philippines languages branch that can be found upstream of Kutai such as the Kenyah and Kayan language groups.

Sambaliung Get's A New Sultan After 49 Years
On the 19th of october 2009 Datu Fachruddin;the oldest surviving son of Sultan Mohammad Aminuddin of Sambaliung in East-Kalimantan;was installed as new sultan here.
The 66 year old sultan is one of the 17 children of the last ruling sultan of Sambaliung in the Berau district, who ruled as regent, sultan and later as areachief (of total Berau) from 1902 until his death in 1960.
The 4th son of the late sultan was for a long time the main representative of the dynasty.
Already 6 of his brothers and 9 of his sisters have died.
The last years he was quite busy with a project to make a forefather of him;called Raja Alam;a new National Hero of Indonesia.
This former ruler of Sambaliung between 1830-1834 and founder of a seperate Sambaliung, away from the Berau sultanate, was blamed to find no reason whatsoever to cooperate with Holland on any field and also working together with pirates, who made the area unsafe for international sea transport.
The new sultan is known as a friendly and humble person, who has time for everybody.
He didn't want to rush his installation as a new sultan, although it was clear for years, that he was the best candidate.
Now his patience is rewarded.
He is now, besides the sultan of Kutai Kartanegara;the 2nd sultan, who is installed.
He has taken however not yet the title of sultan, but pemangku adat(chief of the tradition).
Such royals with a similar title are also to be found in some other areas of East-Kalimantan like the nearby Gunung Tabur (the other area in Berau), Bulungan and the a bit more far lying Pasir, but these dignataries are not installed in such an official and elaborate way.
In Banjarmasin we only have a prince, which is chief of the dynastic organisation.
We all hope of course, that also this new king will be a source of identity for the local people. That this installation will really crrate a new feeling of compeleteness for everybody there.

In one version of the origins of the name of the town of Balikpapan , the word "Balikpapan " originally comes from the name of my grandfather and grandmother who lived along the bay of Balikpapan . Grandfather and grandmother's name was Kayun Kuleng and Sway Board. Descendants of that was eventually given the name Kuleng Board, which in the language of Sand, and KULENG means BOARDS THE BOARD means.
Although the tribe is often described as Dayak tribes who do not move the city ofBalikpapan , cultural symbols Dayak still scattered in the city. Starting from motifs, statues, carvings, and Lamin (traditional house of Dayak) remained preserved in the city of Balikpapan . Special items are also used as a typical cendramata Balikpapan city, though, funny, sellers are mostly descendants cendramata Banjar and Java. In short, distinctive symbols Dayak tribe in Balikpapan remains a symbol, a translation (almost!) You can not get from the town of Balikpapan .

Sanctuary Orchid Kersik Luway
White soft sand covered by shrubs and tall grass. Clumps of trees with yellowish leaves blanketed in the afternoon mist. This is Kersik Luway Nature Reserve from a distance.
Anyone entering the reserve would be struck with amazement at its beauty. But it holds more than natural beauty. Kersik Luway is home to hundreds of East Kalimantan's wild orchids that are now on the verge extinction as forests succumb to deforestation and forest fires.
Located 18 kilometers from Melak, West Kutai regency, Kersik Luway occupies 5,000 hectares of area. Near the entrance to the reserve, on some 400 hectares of area, are 70 species of East Kalimantan's wild orchids. Previously, it had around 80 species but 10 of them were destroyed in a forest fire in 1997.
East Kalimantan has at least 300 species of wild orchids. Wild orchids are difficult to cultivate and once their habitat is damaged, it will be almost impossible for the orchids to survive. The damage caused by the 1997 fire was therefore a big loss to the nation.
The reserve owes its popularity to its rare Black Orchid (Coelogyne pandurata). Growing in shrubs, the Black Orchid blossoms between April and December. In fact, that is the best period to visit the reserve when all the orchids are in full bloom and all you can see is a plethora of colorful orchids.
Forest fires remain the main threat to the reserve. Kersik Luway, according to the reserve's forest rangers, has been hit by forest fires four times. The first was in 1982, then 1994, 1997 and 2000.
Signs of the fires are still evident. Charcoal tree barks can be seen standing, while tall grass and shrubs dominate the vast landscape. Despite the scars, the reserve still holds its beauty.
There are various means of transportation to reach the reserve from Samarinda, which is around 170 kilometers from Kersik Luway. The most comfortable way is to take a boat from Samarinda to Melak. The trip takes around 22 to 24 hours. The boat ride costs Rp 55,000 for one way.
Another way is to go by car, which can take six hours. However, the trip by car can be exhausting as the dirt road from Samarinda to Melak is bumpy.
Accommodation might be a bit of a problem too as Melak does not have big hotels. Only small inns are available in the quiet town. Locals are more than happy to accommodate guests in their houses.
Journalists and researchers must have a special permit to enter the reserve. The permit can be obtained at the Ministry of Forestry in Jakarta or the Natural Resources Conservation Office in Samarinda. But the beauty that awaits visitors is worth all the trouble and discomfort.
